Minor music change haha (oops)

Hello, I am back!

I have been debating doing this through the whole editing process as you guys know we had chosen a trap hood type music called "TIK TOK (No Copyright Sound) Rap on Beat HamburgHood Records - (FREE MUSIC, Trap, Instrumental, Beat). It is upbeat, instrumental, and trap. ----------->

BUT
After repeatly listening to it I have decided it sounded more like the beginning of a horror drama. The deep bass and repeated sound of the dark reminded me of a thriller or horror movie. When this movie is supposed to a Sports Drama that motivational and exciting.
SO
I decided to change it. It was a quick easy change. Since I hadn't cut any part or rearrange anything I changed it with motivational and sports-oriented music and since at the core, this is an athlete's story.

I changed for PUNKY

I went to Bensound and I looked in the motivational/sports cluster and after filtered out what I didn't like I found it was right there. It's fast and determined just like Elena.

AUDIO PROBLEM SOLVED/ Editing Updates

As said in the last editing post we had a big problem with audio.

Although I had decreased the volume of the music in the conversation was not clear and the video sounded awkward.

As said in the last post because I switched from video to iMovie I had new options for me.
- In iMovie I found the button to eliminate background noises this was the ultimate key to hearing the audio and still being able to put the background music.

Another topic I thought was important to discuss was the credits and how spaced they appear.

- The first title was SIMS PRODUCTION which is basically the name of our studio

-The two screens had nothing in order for the audio to recognize our main character and the setting behind her.

I skipped one clip in between credits so the audience wasn't always reading and so the credits were spaced out. I did not include credits in the conversation scene because I wanted the audience listening instead of just looking and reading.

3rd: A film by Maria Jauregui

5th: Sophia Blanco

7th: Isabel Gambril

9th clip: Written, Directed and Edited by Maria Jauregui

11th clip: Featuring Music by Hamburhood Records

13th clip: Cinematographed and Produced by Sophia Blanco

15th and 16th: (short clips so I put it in two): Starring Isabel Gambrill as Elena

CHANGING EDITING SYSTEMS

Hi, guys, I'm back!

As seen in my earlier editing post I was using the recommended wevideo.

I have heard great things about this editing site BUT it's not for me. I have used for other projects but it was really bothering me. Maybe it's because its web-based and not an app but it was extremely laggy and hard to work with.

- There was no way to mute background noises (maybe there was but I could not find it)
- I spent almost TWO HOURS trying to find a way to upload the fonts I had downloaded to use for the credits and the title.

- Not to mention when I tried to do it with a normal font I could not move the title card where I wanted to go. (and I couldn't change the color)
I don't know if it's me or maybe I was having a bad day but I was over it.

So since I had a MacBook I switched over to iMovie. I have used it for my childhood movie when I was little.

Even though I was basically done with my project on wevideo (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PUTTING THE CREDITS) I decided to just push through and start placing the clips again. Since neither site let me copy and paste the video in order.

It was surprisingly  easier this time since I knew where everything went and how much to cut

On iMovie, I could use the fonts and cancel out background noises and overall I was happy with how it turned out

NEXT STEPS

So, because of the lack of footage we have we decided to fill in some scenes to add more background to Elena.

Because these scenes will be at Elena's house the filmmaker can shoot it at their house. This allows us to continue social distances and just add new parts to the film.

Two scenes:

1. Sticky Note from Elena's mom

This adds background of how the mom and the family background is. The Spanish in the sticky will highlight her cultural back ground.

2. Columbian shirt

This shirt will identify the heritage and her feeling towards her cultural. She is proud and she will fight for standing up for her people.

Editing

Today as we edited we worked with the sound of the film.

The film is based on 4 major audios.

1. Alarm clock audio: We used this as the first sound this is because it startle the audience wake them up. It indicates the audience to notice the different objects along the room (telling the story). The audience awakens as Elena does and shows how the perspective is told through her.

2. Song for the whole: TIK TOK (Trap) : This beat is placed throughout the whole opening of the film. This beat has many continual strums this shows how Elena is on auto-pilot. She has a tight schedule and she determine to run and train. The editing part came in when the conversation on the phone came into play. We had to decrease the sound of this to be able to hear it.

3. The audio for the conversation was being taken over by the other sounds. Although we wanted the outside sounds it makes it almost impossible to lower the music to hear. So to not totally decrease the music we changed the video into an audio file to place it over the video.

Quarantine Update

So we are about to start editing but because of Corona Virus we didn't exactly get everything we wanted. Our filming days where cut short.

We were planning shooting another day of Elena running through the neighborhood. We wanted to get more angels of her running and to add more dimensions. But because of the lockdown that was cut short so we had to do with the shots we had already filmed.

To come up with more shots we took some of the "bloopers" and flipped the scenes

Not only did we flip them but cut it so there isn't repetition. Because of the streets of the Trailer Home are very similar this is why we can do this.

For now we have been able to extend the amount of footage we have.

MUSIC MUSIC AND MORE MUSIC

So we have been putting off the looking for a song to put the the background since we had so many ideas.

We knew we wanted it to be instrumental music (no words) this is because real professional and dedicated runners know that their music should have no vocals. This helps the focus of the runner like hearing their breath and pacing themselves. In an article by Engadget its shows how most runners either listen to no music or instrumental type (no vocals).

So we decided to go with instrumental music. We had a few artist that we wanted to copy with our music. The genre is Latin Trap/ Reggeton. This makes her heritage and lifestyle pop out more. The song "I like it like that" by Bad Bunny and Cardi B was the main role model and mood for our music.

After A LOT of searching. We finally found a song to fit our specification. "TIK TOK (No Copyright Sound) Rap on Beat HamburgHood Records - (FREEMUSIC, Trap, Instrumental, Beat). It is upbeat, instrumental, and trap.

FILMING DAY 2

HEY IM BACK
So we filmed our last scenes!

We went to the trailer park and a park in the community of Savanna, in Weston

First we went to the Trailer park to get shots of Elena running through. We really wanted to emphasize the socioeconomic status of the houses. We got multiple shots of Elena running through house with different shots.

But to show a change in scenery we went to the Rinks in Savanna. This shows how long Elena ran for plus the park was filled with caution tape and signs of "UNSAFE STRUCTURE" which added the run-down aspect of the park. This goes to further show how even the parks in her neighbor hood are poorly taken care of.

At the park we shot Elena talking to her coach (on the phone) about the upcoming track meet an how important it is. This is setting up the building blocks for whole movie.

SCRIPT UPDATE

Hey guys I'm back with a new update!

Sadly because of the corona virus we had to cut out the scene of Elena talking to her coach. But we supplemented it by putting in a phone call. We decided the audience was going to only hear Elena side of the call because it would be better fit into the story. This way the audience can infer what she is talking using the images in the scene previous.

FILMING DAY # 1

Today we started filming the first room scenes with the props we had lined up. We were able to get the shots we needed and everything went smoothly! One change we did was we had agreed on doing still shots of the props but we changed it into doing slowly moving shots to go with the paced music we are going to use.

So far we are on track. We had great props on set which fit perfectly into the life style of Elena. We made sure to write her name on sheets of paper (discussed meaning of each prop on another post) I am happy we got to filming even with the pandemic occurring all over the world. We will be shooting the running scene soon!

CORONA VIRUS UPDATE #2

So this is another follow up on how we will continue or fight against corona virus. Since most USA schools have shut down (including mine) for minimum until April 15 we had to move things around. In the other post I had discussed cutting out the school scene. This scene included Elena talking with her coach. Because we lose the school setting we decided to delete that scene. But what changed from the last corona virus post is that now we have decided to add in a call. The call would be while she is running. This way the audience can still learn about the track meet with out having the coach and Elena talking face to face. The call will be one way in which Elena will talk but the audience can't here what on the other side. This still means they have to inference some aspects so we don't lay out everything as if it was a kindergarten movie.

DISTRIBUTING OUR FILM

Hey I am back!
In this post I will discuss how we will distributing our film

Since we are rookie filmmakers we will have little to no money left to the distribute our film so we decided to go with the platform of

"FILMHUB"
Benefits of Film Hub

  • We will be able to keep the rights of our film and the reporting is transparent.
                - This is key so no one copyrights anything and doesn't steal our film.
  • This platform requires no money to use. This is important since we will not have money to spend on distribution
  • It also informs the film producers when it is best to release the movie
             - This goes of the statistical data , based on target audiences, analytics they also include to help us make this decision.
  • Plus 80% of our profit will come directly back to us with no deduction or fees.
  • The uploading process if fast and easy which is good for rookie directors
  • There is no starter fee and the company is fast with dealing money.
We will also use Youtube to distribute trailers and short clips

When we want to reach more audiences we will consider switching distributers but we will need to grow first

A SOLUTION... well kinda

IM AM ANNOYED!!
This post will be regarding my last post ( which was just a freak out).

DISCLAIMER: Nothing is set in stone, we just came up with last minute decision and this might change because of certain situations!

SOOOOO, because of the corona virus killing our plans, we have decided to (after much debate) to cut the school scene from the opening. This means we will have to extend the running scene and the room scene. Plus we have to add more hints of the upcoming story since it will not be spelled out in front of the audience. This means more means more props.  For example some ideas were to add a calendar with the words FINALS TRACK MEET on a date close to the current day. Also we can add an email that Elena sent to the college (UCLA) talking about them coming and something about a scholarship. We are trying to make the story as clear as possible with out having to shoot at school which is of course unavailable.

Another suggestion was to do at someone house/ office with the coach being someone’s parent. But like it or not the audience will be able to tell it is not a school setting and that the father/mother is not coach.

WE HATE THE CORONA VIRUS

So my school got shut down because of the corona virus. Although this might be necessary to keep people safe but it really has messed up our production schedule and outcome of our film opening.

At first I was happy because I thought to myself YES we will have more time for shooting. But I quickly realized that this was a complete nightmare. As seen on the storyboard our last scenes of this film opening we are suppose to be AT SCHOOL TALKING WITH ELENA’S “COACH”. This scene was included because we wanted to make sure people understood the whole story.

In related news in Miami ( a city really near us) they are considering closing all the beaches and setting up a curfew so people don’t go out. And since we are basically on the road to full quarantine ( like Italy and other countries) I have began to freak out. WE NEED TO FILM OUTSIDE FOR THE RUNNING THROUGH THE NEIGHBORS HOOD. Not to mention go to each other houses to film the scenes in her room.

We are still trying to accommodate to this circumstances so a solution will be reach as quick as possible.

AN UPDATE ON THIS SOON.

REALIZATION:TIME OF DAY

So, quick update on our thought process. We where going to start filming the running outside  scene. This scene is crucial to establish her dedication and passion as a runner. Since our film starts off with the buzzing of the alarm that is set at 5:00. But what we didn’t realize that the Sun is does not look the same at 5PM it does at 6AM. So funny thing we get it the trailer park. And we make the actress start running but as we check how it looks on the camera it looks like it is the afternoon. So finally we realize we have to stop filming and wait for the weekend. So plan is to go on the weekend early (like 7) and film. Sacrificing sleep but  hopefully it will look realistic.

TARGET AUDIENCE

AGE RANGE
After much research ( with a few exceptions) we have found out that most Drama/Sports movies have the age range from 15-25. This does mean that our movie will be PG-13. This is because the movie does deal with harsh realities of the real world. This might include some foul language ( but not bad bad language). The topics we will be covering is racism, bullying, living in mad neighborhood, intense stress. This topics hit hard and aren’t appropriate to show to a younger audience. Plus Elena is 17 which means the audience can connect with character since they are going through some of the same things (relatable)

GENDER/SOCIO ECONOMIC STATUS
Although most sports/movies are gently tilted to the male side since the protagonist are almost always male. But since I’m our movie Our main character is a young independent women it will be tilted towards the women side. It can still appeal to both gender but it is directed to women. This is because the movie will be going through topics like gender inequality  and plus the whole movie is from a women’s perspective. The socio-economic status of the audience will be low to middle class. Our movie will not shown in big movie theatre. So lower classes will be able to reach the movie. Plus the main character is of lower-middle class which makes her more relatable.

Looking for the correct font ???????

Just like finding a title finding a font was exhausting.

I went on multiple websites to try to find the right vibe of fonts but none of them were right

I went on

  • Dafont.com
  • Envato Elements
  • 1001 Fonts
And finally I found a website that had the type of fonts I wanted:
      Fontspace.com

I was looking for a memorable, sporty, and bold font all in one. And this website gave me tons of options.

This font is inspired by varsity letters. It is sporty bold but it could be very forgettable since it looks like a lot of letters on jackets. This one was on of the two finalist.

This one was my east favorite out of all of them since I saw no correlation to the story. It was not memorable or bold. It just looks like the NASCAR font. So this one was discarded first.

This font was the most artistically orientated. Because the lines that outline the letters look like a track. It is definitely memorable and looks like what the story is going to be about, which is running and track. But this was the second to be removed out of the 4 because it just wasn't as sophisticated or slick. It looks like a cartoon.

WINNER

Finally this one was the winner. It is bold and athletic. It screams track and running because of them marks along the letters. It looks kind of cut up like Elenas life that is filled with wholes. And most importantly it is memorable. If anyone saw this font after seeing the movie it will automatically make them think of the movie.

TITLE, TITLE, TITLE!

THIS HAS BEEN STRESSING!
We are trying to find a the right title for this film but we have run it obstacles. This is because we keep thing of cliche and boring titles.
For example

  • Elena's Journey - This one is very bland, boring, and generic. There is a million movies the main character name then the word journey, trip, or life. It gives no background or story.

  • There is No Slowing Down - We really hate this one. This has got to be the most cliche title ever. Our inspiration was from the sports drama "Never back Down" which is actually not a bad movie. But it doesn't work with what we are trying to say.

  • Spikes -  Now this one I though of because I thought it would be cool to incorporate something from the sport (track) in the title. So spikes are the shoes track runners use. They are specifically for track and are not be used outside of the track. At first I thought this was it this was the title of our film. But the more I looked at it the more I disliked it. Like NO ONE is going to understand this title. There even an emphasis of it.

A SOLUTION: WELL KINDA

So after thinking of those horrible names my friend come up with a pretty decent one.

RUNNING OUT

This will be our title for now. Of course it is not the best title ever since it kinda cliche to include the sport (track) in the title. BUT what I thought was extremely cool was how it can be used as a double meaning.
So Elena can be running out like running out of time until she gets a scholarship to college
                                                                    OR
She is running out of money.

This for now is our movie title. If anything better comes up I will update.

ACTORS FOR MAIN CHARACTERS

Quick update for the casting part of the film.

We have decided that the main character of the film (Elena) will be one of our group members which is Isabel Gambrill.

We have chosen her for a number of reasons. We wanted to depict a Hispanic female that does not look like the stereotypical hispanic.
The stereotypical hispanic would be tan skin, dark brown/black hair, and dark brown eyes. We decided to deviate a little because we want to represent the whole hispanic community. Also Isa is athletic which is perfect since she has to play the role of an all star track athlete.

Another plus is that we won't have schedule time with her since she is part of group which makes it easier to shoot at any time.

B     U     T
The problem is we are still looking for someone to act as the coach of the film. We have a few people in mind.

Mrs. Boorom who is the student athlete guidance consumer (still have not asked)

Or someones dad or mom

But we aren't as concerned with this because as seen on the last post the scene of that conversation might be cut completely.

Group Meeting

In our class we did a group meeting. This is when people from other group got together to talk about our projects and help each member by giving them new ideas or a new perspective.

How to make the opening more engaging, I was concerned if the viewers would get the clues around the characters room. Finally I needed help getting ideas for what type of music to use.

   IDEA #1
For the beginning scene one of my classmates had a really good idea to put a track commentators speaking in the back. This would act as another clue to her success in track. They would say her last name anyhow great she is. This is a good way to add layers on top of the music so it isn't so mundane.

   IDEA #2
As I explained the story and shots of the opening scene to my classmates I made sure to ask if they understood the story. They thought it was a great idea to make the audience infer things instead of just telling them straight on. One interesting suggestion that we might use is to not even use the last scene of the opening which is the student talking to coach. Because it is smarter to just hint an upcoming track meet with a calendar or a reminder on the phone. A full on conversation spelling out things that the audience just saw and inferred can be a little redundant. But once again we still aren't sure if the message is too vague.

 IDEA #3
Finally the last question I had what was type of music. I had some genres written down all ready and I showed them to the group to ask them which one fit the most. I ha pop, electronic, English rap, and finally Spanish trap. Everyone (even me) agreed that the superior choice was Spanish trap because it shows her hispanic heritage which is a major storyline in the film.

Costume Design

Our main character (Elena) is athletic hispanic, and is in a low economic status. With the costumes she wear we really want to highleight all of her different aspects in the way she dresess.

DIFFERENT ASPECTS

HISPANIC
When I researched about what type of colors most Hispanic wear it is traditionally very bright colors like yellow, orange, pink, blue. This is because in older times girls used to wear the hispanic dresses with a lot of bright colors to dance in. This has been modernize to all clothing.

ATHLETIC
Elena main goal in life is to run track in college. This is why her type of clothes are "athleisure" this means even when she isn't running track or exercsing. This builds up the fact that her whole world is revoled aroundd track.

ECONOMIC STATUS

This will be highlighted by the brands she wears. Although Nike (outlet) isn't the cheapest stores she will wear some shorts from there. But she will not have any Lululemon,Gymshark, or Adidas. And all of her clothing will be presented as a little old and dirty. And for her tops she will wear shirts from past track meets. This is becuause  almost all competitions give free shirts out to the winners of the meet which not only higlights her econmic status but that is she a good runner. Her shoes will be worn out and old.

Mise-en-scene elements

Since we have changed the begingin part of the film to a more descriptive scene showing everything that makes up her character we decided to include more mise-en-secen elements to make sure the message pops out for the audience.

#1 Mise-en-scene for motivation/track
The mdeals and tropihics shows her succes in track and how she ran for long time as well as the potraits  of her on the track.

Around the room she will have multiple posters of a her dream shool which is UCLA. UCLA is known for their good ranking in girls track this establishes our characters motivation  for working so hard.

Around the room she will have multiple posters of a her dream shool which is UCLA. UCLA is known for their good ranking in girls track this establishes our characters motivation  for working so hard.
#2 Socioeconimic mise-en-scene

On the tables there will papaers that have written past due which shows how they don't have enough money to pay for bills sometimes. Then on her desk she will be writing her financial aid sheet because she needs money for college. An partially  empty fridge also is sign for low status homes. This is renforice by how worn out her shoes out and how dirty. Finally the scene from the orignally film opening will be shorten but used by her running through her neighborhood.

#3 Cultural Mise-en-scene
A big part of the character is that she is columbin a good way to indicate that she is by putting columbian flages all over the house. And she will see a note IN SPANISH (add subtitles) from her mom to have good day which farther makes sure the audience gets the message.
